Zainteresowania badawcze

Professor Chmielewski był jednym z głównych badaczy chemii koordynacyjnej mono- i diheteroporfiryn, szczególnie z niklem. Pracował także nad chemią koordynacyjną N-alkiloporfiryn i reaktywnością porfirynowych kationorodników.

Główne osiągnięcie to synteza N-odwróconej porfiryny (opublikowane w 1994) co następnie zaowocowało serią artykułów opisujących jej reaktywność i właściowości koordynacyjne.

Obecnie prof. Chmielewski kontynuuje indywidualnie badania. Wykorzystuje odwróconą porfirynę co konstrukcji bardziej złożonych układów.
